Air Conditioning KNOWLEDGE

Heat Pumps

Generally when people refer to Air Conditioning they automatically think its used for cooling however it also heats. It does this by simply reversing the cycle and the majority of new Air Conditioning units provide heating as standard.

When Air Conditioning is used for heating you can have a COP of around 4 for systems running optimally. This means that with every 1kw of energy that is used in running of the system it produces 4kw of heat output. To put this into perspective a standard electric heater will use 1kw of energy and produce 1kw of heating so using Air Conditioning for heating can be 3x more energy efficient than conventional heating systems which in turn lowers your carbon footprint by up to a massive 75%!

Traditionally gas has been used for heating which has until recently been 3x cheaper than electric so even though using Air Conditioning for heating is 3x more efficient there has not been a noticeable cost saving until now. This is because Air Conditioning units have become more efficient and the price of gas has increased which means it can save you around 20% on your heating bills compared to a traditional gas boiler and this is likely to increase as gas becomes more expensive and electricity cheaper making it the only logical and sustainable way to provide heating.

Using Air Conditioning to heat your home powered from Solar Panels can provide you considerable savings.

There are two common types of Heat Pumps used in residential applications, one is used to heat the air and the other to heat water. Many users are retrofitting gas boilers with heat pumps to heat water for the domestic heating system but this can be costly to install due to the upgrading of the existing heating system and unfortunately it doesn't provide any cooling during these hotter summer months. If you are retrofitting into an existing home I would always recommend installing a heat pump to heat the air so you also get the cooling benefit in the summer. The majority of the time this can work out much cheaper too and it can be installed in individual rooms.

Currently there is 0% Vat on all heat pump systems installed in residential sites.
